Abstract

1,080,191. Particle accelerators. CSFCOMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. March 23, 1966 [March 24, 1965], No. 12806/66. Heading H1D. A magnetic field arrangement for directing a beam of charged particles, e.g. electrons, emerging from a particle accelerator on to a target comprises a pair of sectoral magnets for successively deflecting the beam in the same sense, the relationships between the successive angles of deflection (α, #), the radii of curvature (R, r), the distances between the magnets and between the second magnet and the target (P, L), and the co-ordinates of the target (d, γ) being so chosen that the particles are energy focused and direction focused in both the horizontal and vertical planes. Appropriate formulµ are given in the Specification. The magnet entry and exit surfaces are rotatable and the entry and exit surfaces of the second magnet may be concave. The first magnet may have polepieces of suitable profile to form a field gradient magnet with varying gap width.
