Abstract
902,647. Ion sources. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Aug. 16, 1960 [Aug. 17, 1959], No. 28022/59. Class 39 (1). In a mass spectrometer having an ion source compartment 1 for housing an ion source 2, and a pipe 3 for introducing a gas sample, e.g. uranium hexafluoride, to the ion source, the ion source is mounted on a plate 6 in such a way that it can be inserted in and withdrawn from the compartment in a direction transverse to the direction of firing the ion beam 5 unimpeded by the pipe. The base-plate 9 for the ion source and the end-plate 8 have slots 33, 34 for the passage of the pipe. The base-plate 9 and the accelerating and focusing electrodes 10, 11 are mounted on quartz dowels 7 and spaced from each other and from the end-plates 6, 8 by quartz spacers 12. The plate 8 has clamping bolts 14. A collimator plate 16 is also shown. Gold ring seals are shown at 20 and 31. The ion source, Fig. 2, includes a cathode 48, an anode 55 and two parallel bridge strips 42, 43 defining a channel for the electron beam. The strips 42, 43 span a plate 38 which is provided with a hole 46 which registers with the gas inlet pipe. Specification 874,833 is referred to.
