Abstract

1,250,942. Mass spectrometers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 7 Sept., 1970 [18 Sept., 1969], No. 46162/69. Addition to 1,161,432. Heading H1D. Ion beam converging means 36 are provided between the plural-ion sources 114, 214 and the analyser sectors 22, 24 of the mass spectrometer of the parent Specification so that the beams 120, 220 on entering the analyzer are parallel and more closely spaced than when leaving said sources. The sources 114, 214 are disposed in separate chambers 112, 212 evacuated through ports 116, 216 and having beam exit slits 118, 218. The converging means 36 comprise a symmetrical arrangement of pairs of oppositely charged sectors 138, 139 etc. (two sectors 141 and 241 being shown fused together). An asymmetrical arrangement is possible, e.g. with one beam passing straight to the analyzer. The beams pass from the converging means 36 through collimating slits 119, 219 to an optional electrostatic analyzer 22 and a magnetic analyzer 24 separated by an ion monitor or total ion current collector 34 and then pass through collector slits 126, 226 to collectors 128, 228 which may be electron multipliers 130, 230 provided with beam diverging means 242 to enable the multipliers to be suitably spaced apart. The entire spectrometer is enclosed in a vacuum-tight envelope 32. The drawing is a view of the spectrometer with the curved axis straightened out. A circuit arrangement supplying operating potentials for the spectrometer is described (Fig. 3, not shown).
