Abstract

1,024,925. Mass spectrometers. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. May 4, 1964 [May 2, 1963], No. 18508/64. Heading H1D. In a high - frequency quadrupole mass filter of the type described in Specification 773,689 in which the ions are caused to travel in stable or unstable paths in dependence upon their masses by means of a high-frequency electric field, the potential of which is a quadratic function of the X and Y co-ordinates, the space between the quadrupole rods 31 to 34 is subdivided by a crossed-plate electrode 37, 38 to form a plurality of " monopole " arrangements, the ion beam 39 passing centrally of the system to a common collector. For analysing two or more different gases simultaneously the rods 31 to 34 may be of different diameters and differently spaced from the central axis, a plurality of separate collectors being provided. Further, different voltages may be applied to the separate monopole arrangements and an arbitrary number, e.g. eight, monopole arrangements may be formed. The angle electrodes 37, 38 may be of mesh form.
