Abstract
1,116,807. Mass spectrometers. VARIAN MAT G.m.b.H. 20 Aug., 1965 [4 Sept., 1964], No. 35836/65. Heading H1D. In a magnetic sector type mass spectrometer with (a) an electron beam bombardment type of ion source in which the electron beam is focused by a magnetic field and (b) two ion collector systems for collecting ions of two different ranges of mass number, provision is made for switching over the voltage applied between two halves of a lens electrode of the ion source for introducing a transverse component to compensate for the deflection of the ions due to the magnetic field of the ion source simultaneously with the change-over from one ion collector system to the other by alteration of the ion acceleration voltage. The ion source also includes a pair of deflection electrodes for focusing the ions in the direction of the main magnetic field and the voltages on these electrodes are also changed at the same time as the change-over from one ion collecting system to the other.
