1404693 Ion beam apparatus particle spectrometers COMPAGNIE D'APPLICATIONS MECANIQUES A L'ELECTRONIQUE AU CINEMA ET A L'ATOMISTIQUE 18 July 1973 [21 July 1972] 34319/73 Heading H1D An apparatus which can be used as an ion microanalyser or as a mass spectrometer comprises a source 2 from which secondary ions are emitted through a lens 3 to a first magnetic deflector D 1 which deflects the beam to an element 5 which is selectively operable as an electrostatic mirror or as a transmission filter. In the microanalyser mode the element 5 is a mirror which reflects ions in a range of energies to a second magnetic deflector D 2 , a lens 6 and an image converter 7. In the spectrometer mode ions in a certain range of energies are transmitted by the filter 5 to an electrostatic analyser 8 and an ion collector 9. The detailed mechanical structure of the element 5 is described with reference to Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown).
