Abstract

1,134,448. Mass spectrometers. HITACHI Ltd. 23 Sept., 1966 [30 Sept., 1965], No. 42647/66. Heading H1D. A double-focusing mass spectrometer has the electrostatic analyzer 6 located after the magnetic analyzer 3 and has a first stage slit 4 and an ion collector 5 for deriving a single focusing low resolution mass spectrum indicating metastable ions. The double-focusing high resolution mass spectrum is derived from the final slit 7 and the ion collector 2. The field across the electrostatic analyzer is swept when an output is derived from the first stage collector 5 in such manner as to exert a braking action on the ions in a direction opposite to the direction of sweep across the magnetic field. To this end the electrostatic sweep circuit 17 is actuated by peak senser 22 and flip-flop circuit 24 and deactuated by an upper-limit discriminator 23 which serves to reset both the flip-flop circuit 24 and the sweep circuit 17.
