Abstract
1350980 Mass spectrometers VARIAN MAT GmbH 19 April 1971 [17 March 1970] 24227/71 Heading H1D In a mass analysis apparatus in which a beam of ions is passed through a mutipole mass filter, the range of ion masses transmitted through the filter is scanned by changing the values of the A.C. and D.C. field voltages applied to the poles of the filter whilst maintaining constant the value of a/q, where the function a = f(q) defines stable and unstable ion ton trajectories in the mutipole field and a and q areeach dependent upon the ion mass and are respectively dependent upon the D.C. component of the field voltage and upon the A.C. component of the field voltage. In the preferred embodiment, the D.C. component is zero and the filter transmits all ions having masses above a cut-off value determined by the value of q 0 at which the ion trajectory becomes unstable. Ion electron beam 6 produces an ion beam 9 in an ion source 1 containing a substance to be analyzed. The ion beam axially enters the quadrupole field 2 produced by four rods to which voltage source 14 supplies an adjustable D.C. voltage and/or an adjustable A.C. voltage. As the field voltage is raised, the point q o of instability is reached for ions of progressively increasing mass so that the transmitted ion beam exhibits a step spectrum as ions are successively removed from the beam. To convert the step spectrum to a conventional line spectrum there is provided an energy analyzing system comprising an entrance electrode 15 and part-spherical mesh electrode 16 (both of which are earthed) and a retarding/collecting electrode 17 to which is applied a voltage adjustable so that only the most energetic ions, whose trajectories in the quadrupole field are associated with a value of q close to the parameter q 0 reach the collector. In alternative arrangements Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown) the energy analysis is effected by an electrostatic quadrant or a magnetic field.
