Abstract

1,256,208. Mass spectrometers. BENDIX CORP. 16 June, 1970 [15 Sept., 1969], No. 29054/70. Heading H1D. In a mass spectrometer of the type wherein ions 10, 11, 12 are accelerated through a drift tube 7 and impinge a cathode 20 to release electrons which pass on to the dynode 31 of an electron multiplier, the cathode 20 is located in a plane 50 that makes an acute angle A with a plane 60 perpendicular to the longitudinal axis 8 of the drift tube, so that all electrons propagated from the cathode by impingement of ions having the same mass, strike the dynode 31 at the same time. A grid 4 with apertures 2 covers the end of the drift tube 7. The output signal from the multiplier may be synchronized on an oscilloscope or passed through gates (35) (Fig. 1, not shown) to an analogue for strip chart recording.
