Abstract

1287291 Ion sources PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 23 Sept 1969 [26 Sept 1968] 46804/69 Heading H1D An ion source for a mass spectrometer comprises a gutter-shaped repeller electrode 305, an apertured extraction electrode 303 and an apertured accelerating electrode 306, in which gas in the region 301 is ionized by an electron beam perpendicular to the plane of the paper, wherein the inner wall 304 of the repeller electrode is shaped, as shown, to form a tapered edge portion 308 of the repeller electrode adjacent the extraction gap 302. This electrode configuration produces an electric field distribution in the repeller electrode, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), which does not differ appreciably whether the voltage on the accelerating electrode is low, e.g. 80 V., or high, e.g. 2000 V., the extractor electrode having a potential of 1 v. and the repeller electrode being grounded in both cases. Thus, when the ion source is used in a mass spectrometer in which the spectrum of the gas in the ion source is obtained by varying the accelerating electrode voltage, the extraction efficiency of light ions, e.g. of mass 2 with a 2000 V. accelerating voltage, and of heavy ions, e.g. of mass 40 with a 100 V. accelerating voltage, may vary by less than 25%. Prior art arrangements in which the cavity in the repeller electrode is rectangular or semi-circular Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown) are also described.
