Abstract

957,117. Mass spectrometers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 11, 1962 [Dec. 19, 1961], No. 45470/61. Heading H1D. In a mass spectrometer a collector member for receiving ions, after they have been deflected in the magnetic analyser, is movable in the plane of travel of the ions. As shown, a mass spectrometer comprises an ion source 1 for producing a beam 2 of ions, a magnetic analyser including a polepiece 4 for deflecting the ions, and collecting apparatus including a cup-shaped member 6 and a collector plate 11 having a layer 12 of ion-sensitive material for receiving those ions not collected by the member 6. A threaded rod 7, carrying the member 6, is rotatable by hand or by a power unit 8 so that the member 6 can be moved in the plane of travel of the ions to collect ions of different mass/charge ratios. A device 9 indicates and measures the intensity of the ions received by member 6. Two collector members 6 can be used to receive respectively ions of two different mass/charge ratios.
