Abstract
803,742. Mass spectrometers. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 15, 1956 [Dec. 1, 1955]. No. 34432/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XL(c)] In a mass spectrometer the mass spectrum is swept across the collector resolving slit and the effective width of the slit is varied inversely with respect to mass number while the rate of scan is varied so that for each mass number the time of collection is the same. The overall time of scan is then adjusted to the minimum consistent with obtaining a given recording accuracy. The effective width of the slit may be varied electrically as described in Specification 759,917 and controlled by the magnet current in the case of magnetic scan or by the accelerating voltage in the case of electrostatic scan. The desired variation of control voltage which may be in steps or may approximate a smooth curve is obtained by means of a thermionic amplifier circuit employing negative feedback (see Group XL(c). The direction of scan may be from heavy to light elements or vice versa.
