Abstract

1,232,613. Mass spectrometers. PERKINELMER CORP. 11 Oct., 1968 [16 Oct., 1967], No. 48347/68. Heading H1D. In a magnetic mass spectrometer both the flux density B and the ion accelerating voltage V are varied linearly with time while the ratio B/V is maintained constant during a scanning interval of the mass spectrum. This enables a linear recording of the mass data as a function time without, due to a resulting varying resolution accompanying the variation of V, an increase in the bandwidth of the scanning and peak amplifying components of the spectrometer. As shown the current scanner 26 for the electromagnet 24 and the voltage scanner 16 for the ion source electrode 14 are both supplied by a scanning signal source 30. A feedback circuit including a flux sensing transducer may be provided to detect any variation in the linearity of the scanning current and to provide a correcting signal. Alternatively the varying voltage generator may comprise a closed circuit loop including a dividing network 42, Fig. 4, which provides an output voltage representative of the ratio B/V, a slope adjusting circuit 44 and an amplifier 46.
