Abstract
776,411. Mass spectrometers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. June 8, 1955 [June 8, 1954], No. 16484/55. Class 39(1). In a mass spectrometer in which resonant ions are sorted from non-resonant ions and collected at 37 in a steady magnetic field and perpendicular R.F. field, the R.F. field between the end voltage plates 24, 25 is non-linear, and asymmetrical as related to the centre of the tube. The oscillator 10 is coupled over condenser 11 to one of the intermediate voltage grading plates, preferably plate 29 adjacent ion collector 37. The remaining plates are grounded. In addition D.C. sources 40, 41, 42 of from 0À001 to 3À0 volts may be connected as shown. Condensers 43, 44 provide short circuits for the R.F. These methods are stated to give improved resolving power, ion current sensitivity, linearity and stability.
