Abstract

1,126,102. Mass spectrometers. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. 16 May, 1966 [17 May, 1965], No. 21594/66. Heading H1D. In a mass spectrometer employing cyclotron resonance in crossed magnetic and R.F. electric fields the ions are generated in a first region 32 and move into and through a second region 33 under crossed static and electric fields, the R.F. field being superimposed on the static electric field in region 33. The resonant ions are collected on the side walls of region 33 while the non-resonant ions are collected on collector 43. The resonant condition may be varied by modulating the magnetic field, the R.F. frequency or the electrode voltages. The magnetic field may be reversed and a collector 45 provided at the opposite end of region 32 used to measure the total ion current.
