Abstract

906,499. Mass spectrometers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 4, 1961 [April 19, 1960], No. 13681/60. Class 39 (1). In a cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer or " omegatron " the ion collector 16 is linear, is normal to the R.F. electric field E, or inclined to E at an angle not exceeding 5 degrees, and is parallel to the applied magnetic field B. Also each end of the ion collector is at least 1.5 mm. from the walls 6 and the collector is between 1 and 3 mm. from the earthed R.F. plate 9. More specific dimensions are given. Preferably, the ion collector is a circular wire whose periphery does not exceed 3 mm. The lead to the ion collector is screened by a surrounding earthed conductor. The omegatron may be of the type having guard rings to ensure a uniform R.F. field. Specification 906,498 is referred to.
