Abstract
906,498. Mass spectrometers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 4, 1961 [April 19, 1960], No. 13680/60. Class 39 (1). A cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer or " omegatron " having a rectangular ionization and mass selection zone bounded by metal surfaces 6 has the following dimensions: length, in the direction of the R.F. field E, between 17 and 36 mm.; thickness, in the direction of the applied magnetic field B, between 8 and 15 mm.; width, at right-angles to both E and B, at least as great as the length. Also the collector electrode 12 is spaced between 1 and 3 mm. from the earthed R.F. electrode 9 and the maximum orbit diameter available for a resonant ion is between 15 and 30 mm. Particularly suitable dimensions are given. The leads to the R.F. plate 11 and to the ion collector 12 are screened by earthed conductors. The omegatron may be of the type having guard rings subdividing the R.F. field so as to secure a uniform field. Specification 906,499 is referred to.
