Abstract

1,162,245. Mass spectrometers. ELECTRONIC ASSOCIATES Inc. 12 Sept., 1966 [13 Sept., 1965], No. 40579/66. Heading H1D. In a mass spectrometer of the quadrupole type such as described in Specification 773,689 in which either the R.F. voltage or the frequency is varied to sweep the mass spectrum, the ions are injected into the analyzer section through a circular aperture of diameter equal to the least distance r 0 from the central axis of the analyzer to each electrode in order to improve sensitivity. The ratio of R.F. voltage to D.C. voltage may also be varied as in Application No. 40578/66. Preferably the aperture is a circular opening in a flat plate or it may be cylindrical and have a focusing action. The aperture 21b may include, as shown, an ion blocking grid 30 with its four arms aligned with the asymptotic planes of the quadrupole electrodes 11. The electrodes may be circular or hyperbolic in cross-section.
