Abstract

To deal with a wide range of ion beam intensities from a mass spectrometer, the electrostatic analyzer may be adapted to direct the beam to collectors of different sensitivities. Essentially, the ion collector comprises a direct and a high gain receiver, both fixed relative to the electrostatic analyzer; an electric circuit is connected to the analyzer and can be controlled at one voltage level to bend the ion beam to meet a direct collector and, at a different voltage level, to bend the beam to meet a high gain collector.
