Abstract
1,049,561. Shutters. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 24, 1964 [April 19, 1963], No. 15551/63. Heading G2A. [Also in Divisions H1 and H5] An aperture 5 in a plate 4 is covered or uncovered by the movement of a shutter blade 6 pivoted at 3 to the plate, the movement being controlled by a piezo-electric element 8. One end of the element is secured to an insulating block 9 on the plate, and the other end is free, lying between two pins 12, 13 on the shutter blade. When a suitable potential is applied to the element through leads 14,15, it is mechanically deformed, and so, by engaging against one or other of pins 12, 13, causes the blade 6 to open or close the aperture 5. A suitable circuit which reverses the applied p.d. after a predetermined time may be used as a timing means. Such a shutter may be used to interrupt a beam of light, or X-rays, or charged particles such as electrons or ions. In the latter case an electrostatic screen 18 may be provided. Fig. 2 (not shown) is a more elaborate arrangement in which the shutter is formed by four separate blades, each mounted on a separate piezo-electric element, which latter are electrically connected in parallel.
