Abstract
1,145,132. Mass spectrometers. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. 17 Aug., 1966, No. 36883/66. Heading H1D. In a dual orbit magnetic mass spectrometer ions of mass range 1 to 10 and ions of mass range 10 to 100 follow respective trajectories 28 and 27 and are collected simultaneously at collectors 44 and 36 when the accelerator voltage is swept from 1,000 to 100 volts, the magnetic polepieces being so shaped that ions in each trajectory enter and leave the field at 90 degrees to the field boundary. As shown the polepieces 22 have semi-circular disc-like terminations 37 towards the ion source 13. The radius of curvature of the trajectory 28 for the lighter ions is smaller by a factor of #10= 3À16 than the radius of curvature of the trajectory 27 for the heavier ions, and the deflection arcs are respectively 120 and 135 degrees. The ion source 13 is of the electron beam bombardment type employing a flat electron stream which is collimated by the fringing field of the spectrometer magnet and a mesh grid electrode between the ionization chamber and the ion accelerator electrode. Suitable dimensions and spacings and voltage values and values of magnetic field strength are given.
