Abstract

915,657. Electron beam apparatus. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 15, 1961 [Aug. 22, 1960], No. 28989/60. Class 39 (1). In an electron beam furnace several electron guns 1 are housed in a separately evacuated chamber 3 and the beam produced enters the main chamber 2 through ducts 5 where they are focused and deflected by electrostatic or mag. netic means 6, 7 on to the ingot 8. Positive ions are precluded from entering the beam ducts 5 by the deflecting arrangement. The beams are preferably line focused. Some of the beams can be made to impinge on the feed rod 9. Additionally a hopper ingot feed 11 may be provided. Vapour condensing plates 12 are provided.
