Abstract

1,214,949. Electron beam furnaces. AIR REDUCTION CO. Inc. 30 Aug., 1968 [13 Sept., 1967], No. 41551/68. Heading H1D. An electron beam furnace comprises an electron gun 16, Fig. 1, adapted to produce at least two electron beams and disposed in a compartment 14 separated from the compartment 13 containing the crucible 21 by an apertured partition 12, the two compartments being evacuated by separate pumps (not shown) to prevent vapours evolved from the target material 19 affecting the electron gun; the system is characterized by the provision adjacent the electron gun of two bowed magnetic fields 56 and 57, Fig. 3, produced by pairs of polepieces 34, 36 and 37, 38 energized by coils 39 and 41, and of a third opposing field produced by a coil 52. The fields 56 and 57 serve to focus and deflect the respective beams, whilst the coil 52 serves to establish a field 58 between the outer polepieces which causes the two beams 17 to converge, for example on the aperture 18, Fig. 1. Each electron source may comprise an elongate tungsten wire 42 or 43 disposed in a recess 44 or 47 in a negative shaping electrode 46 or 48 in front of which is arranged an earthed accelerating electrode 46a or 48a. After the beams pass through the aperture 18, Fig. 1, they pass between two quadrant shaped polepieces, of which one 26 is shown in Fig. 1; these polepieces are joined at the top by a low reluctance web 31 and by two coils (28 and 29, Fig. 2, not shown) which are separately energized to control the strength and direction of the field between the polepieces. This field focuses the beams in a vertical direction and may also be used to vary the longitudinal position of the impact area on the surface of the molten material 19 or to cause the beam to strike the end of the feedstock wire 23 which is fed by a mechanism not shown. The crucible 21 may be provided with coolant passages 22 for forming a layer of solid material between the liquid material and the crucible.
