Abstract
982,671. Ion sources. CSF-COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. March 21, 1963 [April 2, 1962; June 26, 1962], No. 11215/63. Heading H1D. An ion gun includes a body of refractory metal having at least one straight capillary duct having a transverse dimension not greater than about one millimetre. As shown, an ion gun comprises a body 1, e.g. of tungsten, molybdenum tantalum, nickel or the like, heated by a filament 2 and formed with a capillary duct which is fed with vaporized metal from a reservoir 3 having the metal 4, e.g. caesium, rubidium or potassium, at its evaporation temperature. The multiple impact of the vaporized metal atoms in the duct, together with electron emission on the inside of the duct, results in a strongly ionized gas which effuses from the duct and from which ions are extracted by a focusing electrode 5 and an accelerating electrode 6 both of which receive a cooling fluid. The ion gun may include an array of the capillary ducts described above (Fig. 2, not shown). The capillary body may be formed by an arrangement of flat plates and spacers giving duets having an elongated rectangular cross-section by an assembly of coaxial cylinders giving ducts having an annular cross-section, or by an arrangement giving ducts of a triangular cross-section (Figs. 4, 5 and 6, not shown). Specification 903,375 is referred to.
