Abstract

984,427. Velocity-modulated tubes. SPERRY RAND CORPORATION. June 13, 1961 [June 17, 1960], No. 21290/61. Heading H1D. In a klystron or travelling-wave tube the collector electrode is operated at a relatively low potential and a thin apertured gridless disc having an axial thickness no greater than twotenths of the axial separation between a member at the end of the interaction region, which is biased positively relative to the collector electrode, and the collector electrode, is disposed in front of the collector electrode and operated at cathode potential, to establish a potential minimum which acts to suppress secondary electrons from the collector. The potential minimum is above cathode potential to avoid the blocking of the primary beam and is at least 30 volts below the potential of the collector electrode. The thin apertured disc may be supported by ceramic envelope rings. In the klystron shown the thin apertured disc 46 is supported by the insulating tube 47. The internal polepieces 41, 42 form the bounding electrodes of the interaction structure 33, 34. The precise aperture diameter and axial position of the disc 46 may be determined by use of an electrolytic tank or from curves given in the Specification. Two or more discs 46 may be provided and the facing surfaces of electrodes 42, 43 may approximate cylindrical or spherical surfaces to co-operate with converging or diverging beams.
