Abstract
980,929. Velocity-modulated tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 22, 1962 [May 25, 1961], No. 19665/62. Heading H1D. In a klystron comprising a drift tube 2 the sections of which are separated by cavity resonators 3 and a collector electrode, the drift tube is so shaped that its end face 25 lies in a plane oblique to the longitudinal axis 1 of the drift tube, and the end of the drift tube extends into an aperture 11 of the collector 5; when the collector is at a negative potential with respect to the drift tube, an oblique electrostatic lens 27 is formed between the collector and the drift tube so that slow electrons 19, 21 are deflected towards the drift tube in oblique directions. The surface of the drift tube 2 may be ridged, as illustrated, and coated to reduce secondary emission. An external magnetic field may be provided at right angles to the axis of the tube and to the direction of deflection of the electrons.
