Abstract

677,586. Travelling-wave tubes. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. May 18, 1950 [June 2, 1949], No. 12471/50. Class 39 (i). In a travelling-wave amplifier in which the electron beam moves in a direction normal to crossed electrostatic and magnetic fields and parallel to a retardation line in which an electromagnetic wave is propagated at a phase velocity equal to that of the electron beam, the retardation line consists of a positive helix 1, Fig. 2, and a negative conductor 2 within the helix. The electron beam 3 travels inside the helix where the greater part of the power of the wave is propagated. In one embodiment, Fig. 4a, in addition to the electron beam propagated between the helix 1 and the internal conductor 2, a second electron beam is propagated between the helix and an external negative conductor 2<SP>1</SP> for interaction with the wave outside the helix. Opposite the two cathodes 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, are located auxiliary collectors 15, 151 for collecting the electrons in the absence of the magnetic field. The helix 1 is secured to longitudinal quartz or ceramic rods by a number of clasps. In another embodiment, Figs. 5a, 5b (not shown), the electrodes are bent round in a circle. Specifications 663,728 and 677,536 are referred to.
