Abstract
646,546. Travelling-wave tubes. M-O VALVE CO., Ltd., HUMPHREYS, B. L., and KITE, L. V. May 27, 1948, No. 14327. [Class 39 (i)] A travelling wave tube 1 contains at least two substantially coaxial helical conductors along the path of the electron beam. The phase velocity frequency characteristic can be adjusted by choosing dimensions for the helices to a degree that would only be obtainable with the usual single helix if the latter were appreciably smaller than either of the multiple helices. The tube is provided with an electron gun 2 and a collecting electrode 3. The helices 4 and 5 are mounted between cylinders 9 and 11 which form wavetraps with cylinders 16 formed on input and output waveguides 13 and 17. The ends 10 and 12 of the helices couple the tube to the wave-guides. In limiting cases one of the helices may be a number of straight rods or a number of parallel rings.
