Abstract

678,723. Travelling wave tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL, Ltd. Sept. 27, 1949 [Sept. 30, 1948], No. 24749/49. Class 39 (i). The helix of a travelling wave tube is in two parts which are not coupled by the electron beam and the length of the first part is at least twice as long as the second part, the latter being 15 wavelengths at the most and the greater 30 wavelengths at least. The tube 1 encloses two sets of annular electrodes 5, 7 between which extend the two helices 6, 8 of lengths 35 cms. and 15 cms. respectively. U-shaped wave-guide 11 couples the ends of helix 6 and the beginning of helix 8, the wall of the tube at 16 being covered with a layer of graphite to prevent the electron beam from coupling the two helices. Input and output wave-guides 9, 10 are coupled to the extreme ends of the helix. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the two parts of the helix are in separate parallel tubes, and coupled together by a laterally extending wave-guide.
