Abstract

767,078. Travelling wave tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 25, 1955 [April 3, 1954], No. 8858/55. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XL(b)] A travelling wave tube has within the evacuated envelope thereof one or more helices carried by low loss dielectric rods within a dielectric tube, there being rigid mechanical connections between the dielectric tube and the gun and between the dielectric rods and the dielectric tube. The helix 18, Fig. 1, is carried by low loss insulating rods 17 inside a dielectric tube 15, the rods 17 being secured to inner waveguide choke sleeves 4, 11 and the dielectric tube 15 to similar choke sleeves 9, 10, the helix 18 is coupled to waveguide feeders 6, 12 by L- shaped probes 20 and kidney shaped hollow impedance matching members 13 securing the two pairs of inner choke sleeve members 4, 9; 10, 11 together ; choke sleeve 4 is mounted on gun 1 so that the gun and helix form a unitary assembly and choke sleeve 11 is mounted on collector 22 and the loss coating 16 on dielectric tube 15 is given such a diameter as to effect suppression of feedback. In a modification there may be two helices mounted end to end and having different retarded wave velocities. The diameter of loss coating 16 is chosen so that 4 x 10<-3> #u # d/# # 0À3. where U =beam voltage for optimum amplification at wavelength y. d =diameter of tube 15. y =wavelength at centre of band. i.e. 16 must not be so close to the helix as to affect the mode of propagation but its diameter is too small to permit wave propagation between it and the helix. Inner choke sleeve 11 is located by ridge 24 of glass envelope 2 and is spaced from collector 22 by insulating washer 21 ; the collector closes one end of the envelope and carries cooling fins 23. The gun is spaced from the envelope by washer 3. The tubes 13 are made hollow so that D.C. leads can pass through them ; thus for example in a tube with two helices mounted end to end and at different D.C. potentials, the lead to the helix more remote from the gun can be taken through tube 13 at the gun end of the tube. In further modifications, (a) the tube 13 can be replaced by a number of rods, (b) the envelope at the gun end can have an enlarged diameter e.g. for operation at millimetre wavelengths.
