Abstract

689,290. Travelling-wave tubes. LELAND STANFORD JUNIOR UNIVERSITY, BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF. June 29,1951 [June 30,1950], No. 15492/51. Class 39(i) [Also in Group XL(b)] A device for guiding electromagnetic waves consists of a helix which passes into a flat spiral, at least at one of its ends. In the travelling-wave tube shown the two helices 5 and 7 have spirals 21, 23, 31 and 31<SP>1</SP> at their ends. An insulating disc 25 having a carbon coating is placed between spirals 21 and 23, the coating having an aperture at the centre of each side of the disc. Wave energy is thus absorbed at the latter and the signal is carried across the gap solely by the electron stream. Input and output coaxial lines 29 and 37 are provided, their inner conductors being connected to spirals 31 and 31<SP>1</SP>. The tube is completed by a cathode 1. accelerating electrode 3, and collecting electrode 9. Modified tubes are described in which the electron stream is controlled by a single grid, or by passing it through grids in the wall of a cavity resonator. The latter contains a coupling loop connected to an input coaxial line.
