Abstract

695,187. High-frequency discharge apparatus. PATELHOLD PATENTVERWERTUNGS & ELEKTRO-HOLDING AKT.-GES. Feb. 14, 1952 [Feb. 16, 1951], No. 3956/52. Class 39(i) An amplifier tube has a plurality of resonators Rl, R2, R3, of the general kind shown in Fig. 1, spaced opposite a guide electrode L. Electrons from one or more cathodes K are diverted cycloidally by transverse magnetic field N to move between the resonators and the guide to collector M. Each resonator has its wall facing the guide divided by a zig-zag slot into segments C1, C2 connected to the opposite walls between which the electric vector E is developed. The time of flight between segments being a half-cycle, the velocitymodulation effect on the beam is cumulative at each segment, and if the resonator is long enough may provide positive feedback and self-oscillation. Resonator R1 receives an input from lines P1 (to a loop for magnetic coupling, or to successive segments for electric coupling). Resonator R2 provides cascade amplification. Resonator R3 feeds output lines P2. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the whole may be bent into hoop form so that cathode and collector are adjacent. Guide electrode 2 may be a squashed helix to provide extra wave impedance. Band width may be increased by tuning successive resonators slightly above and below the mean frequency and coupling them electrically or magnetically.
