Abstract

683,524. Magnetrons. COMPAGNIE. GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Feb. 3, 1949 [Feb. 4, 1948; Feb. 6, 1948: Feb. 7, 1948; Feb. 11, 1948], Nos. 3044/49, 3045/49; 3046/49 and 3047/49. Class 39(i) A mutti-cavity magnetron has empty grooves formed in the anode block to connect neighbouring cavities to one another; the grooves are of such depth and width as to provide desired degree of coupling between the cavities. The tendency to self-oscillation may be reduced or eliminated, and the magnetron may be operated as a stable amplifier or as a wide-band oscillator. Conventional strapping may also be provided, or the anode segments may be shaped as described in Specification 666,689, to secure operation in the #-mode. As an amplifier, only two cavities may be provided in the anode block. Cavity B<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 12, is the input circuit, and cavity B<SP>2</SP> the output. For cascade amplification further cavities may be inserted between cavities B<SP>1</SP> and B<SP>2</SP>. As shown, Fig. 16, in a class C amplifier the cathode K is eccentric in the cathode space. The intense electric field in the region F prevents electronic back coupling between the input and output circuits, or a suitable magnetic or electrostatic field, or screens may be provided. In a wide frequency band amplifier the input circuit may consist of two cavities B1, B1<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 17, resonant on two adjacent frequencies, and the output circuit a similar pair of cavities B2, B2<SP>1</SP>. As an oscillator, cavities may be provided all round the anode block, and two of the cavities coupled to a tunable stabilizing and output external resonator of high Q. With an external resonator constituted by a wave guide, coupling may be directly to only one cavity through a glass member. Specification 663,625 also is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also the provision of coupling between the cavities through external circuits, such as including a coaxial line, a wave guide, a resonant cavity, or an auxiliary tunable magnetron, instead of, or as well as, through grooves in the anode block. Where grooves are provided their effects may be adjusted by inserting conducting bodies in them. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
