Abstract

650,575. Magnetrons. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 24,1948, No. 5481. Convention date, June 4, 1946. [Class 39 (i)] A magnetron comprising an anode, a cathode and means for forming a cylindrical rotating space charge, has a plurality of resonant cavities with openings juxtaposed to an end surface of the space charge, formed in an auxiliary electrode or resonator member so that the high-frequency field and that of the anode may be independently adjusted. As shown, Fig. 3, a cylindrical anode 25 surrounds a central cathode 28, and adjacent each end is a block 23, 24 having radially extending slot-andhole resonant cavities. 35. The cavities in the block 23 are angularly displaced relatively to the cavities 35 in the block 24. The output load may be taken from both blocks 23, 24 by coupling loops 33, 34, or one loop may be used for the output, and the other may be free of load to act as a stabilizer for the operating frequency. Where the magnetron is used as an amplifier one loop may be used as an input and the other as an output. The cavity blocks form part of the magnetic circuit. In another embodiment the cavity blocks have radial rectangular cavity slots 65, Fig. 5, and alternate sector portions such as 66 or 68 are interconnected by straps 67, 69 located in a recess 70. The inner conductor of an input or output transmission line is connected to a hole 77 provided in one of the sectors. The lead to the central anode is hollow for the circulation of a cooling fluid. The resonant cavities may be formed by radially extending vanes and may be distributed asymmetrically about the central axis of the magnetron. The magnetron may be operated as a reactance device. Specifications 423,897, 424,746, [both in Group XXII], and 635,479 are referred to.
