Abstract

623,766. Magnetrons. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Nov. 8, 1946, No. 33284. Convention date, Feb. 12. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XL (b)] The anode of a cavity magnetron has a wave-guide leading to one of the cavities; the wave-guide is defined by a slot leading into the cavity and by recesses at the top and bottom of the anode block, the slot intersecting the recesses at right angles. Fig. 6 shows an exploded view of an anode. The main anode block 10 contains the resonant cavities 12 which may be alternately coupled by anode straps 15, 16. The block 10 is provided also with a slot 17 extending to one of the cavities and with a pair of recesses 18, one on each face, which extend to the central recesses 14 above and below the resonators. The blocks 19, 20 are sealed to 10, as by brazing, thus defining an H-section wave-guide, of which the recesses 18 form the limbs and the slot 17 the cross-piece, communicating with one of the resonant cavities. This wave-guide is a quarter wavelength long. Fig. 2 shows a cross-section of the complete magnetron; it can be seen that the H-section wave-guide leads into a rectangular wave-guide 53 which is hermetically sealed by a cup member 54 containing a circular window 55 of glass transparent to the frequencies used. A coupling flange 57 is provided for connection to an external wave-guide; the coupling 57 and the guide 53 are provided with opposed annular slots 60, 61 to form choke joints which minimize power losses at the junction. The hollow polepieces 27 of the magnet fit into the apertures in the anode blocks 19, 20. One of the polepieces is sealed by the exhaust tube 29 and the other carries the indirectly heated cathode which is shown in detail in Fig. 3. The cathode tube 30 may bo of nickel or molybdenum and has an emissive coating 34 ; it carries two magnetic collars 39 and is attached to the support 32 by a sleeve 33. The sleeve 33 and heat radiator 40 may be of copper coated with zirconium. The anode is provided with cooling pins 26 which fit into the slots 25 cut in the blocks 19, 10, 20 on three sides. Specification 586,430 is referred to.
