Abstract

592,410. Magnetrons. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 26, 1944, No. 10304. Convention date, March 26, 1943. [Class 39 (i)] A magnetron comprises a metal pipe 10 having a transverse passage 13 forming with the bore 11 of the pipe a central cavity in which the cathode 12 is housed. The bore 11 is preferably of square section. The cathode heater leads 32, 32<1> pass through bores 28, 281 smaller than the central bore 11 and parallel thereto, and emerge through metal sleeves 26, 261 and glass seals 30, 30<1>. The cathode 12 is connected to and supported by the upper lead 32. Polepieces 14 are mounted on either side of the cathode. The passage 13 is sealed by a plate. The magnetron may be coupl'ed, to a device such as a wave-guide by a cap 16 provided with a copper disc 18 slotted at 20 and mica disc 22. The opposite end of the pipe is sealed by a cap 24 having apertures registering with the bores 28, 28<1>. The cathode may alternatively be directly heated or may consist of a lightly wound helix of tungsten wire heated by bombardment by electrons emitted by an enclosed filament. In modifications, the bores through which the heater leads pass are transverse both to the passage 13 and to the main bore. In one form, they extend from opposite ends of the cathode and emerge oh the same side of the pipe and in another they are coaxial with one another and extend from one end of the cathode, passing out through opposite sides of the pipe.
