Abstract
612,513. Magnetrons. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. June 21, 1945, No. 15905. Convention date, Nov. 17, 1943. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XL (c)] In a magnetron including a plurality of evacuated sealed cavity resonators, one resonator is coupled to a wave-guide 28, Fig. 1, by means of a hollow tube 25 sealed at one end to the wall of the resonator and communicating with the resonator through an aperture 24 in the wall, and closed at the other end by a member 27 permeable to electromagnetic waves. The member 27 is sealed across the end of a second hollow tube 26 attached to the tube 25. The magnetron has an evacuated casing 10 containing the magnetron assembly itself, which includes an indirectly-heated cathode 11 surrounded by and coaxial with the anode ring member 12, and radially disposed vanes 13 forming between them the cavity resonators. The cathode heater leads 16 and 17 are shielded from the anode assembly by the shield 18. Tube 26 overlaps the wave-guide 28 to the extent of a quarter wavelength, but is insulated from it by a sleeve 29. Instead of overlapping, the tube 26 and wave-guide 28 may be provided with lips, a quarter of a wavelength wide, spaced apart by a quarter of a wavelength. The complete wave-guide 25, 26, 28 has its longer side parallel to the axis of the cathode so that Ho1 waves are transmitted. In another embodiment, in which the anode comprises a plurality of stacked plates, so punched that a plurality of radially directed slots forming the resonators are provided, one of the slots communicates with a flared opening 49, Fig. 7. This flared opening 49, communicates with the tubular wave-guide and coupling member 50, which may be of rectangular shape and is vacuum sealed by the window 51. Specification 578,585 is referred to.
