Abstract
585,290. Wave guides. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 14, 1945, No. 3751. Convention date, Feb. 14, 1944. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii)] Energy is conveyed from a slotted opening in a cavity resonator to a wave guide by a conductive member with a tapered bore, the shape of the bore merging gradually from that of the slot to that of the guide, the bore being of such cross-section at all points as to afford a constant cut-off frequency, and a gradual transition in impedance. As shown, a cavity magnetron 15 has an output slot, 58, Fig. 5, of dumb-bell shape in a flattened portion .55 of its cylindrical surface. The slot communicates with the bore 12 of a conductive block 44, the bore communicating through a partition 62 and dielectric window 61 with a wave guide 11 of rectangular cross-section. Successive cross-sections of the bore taken at intervals along the axis show increasing sizes of the circular openings '51, 52 and increasing widths of the slot 53 until both dimensions approximately reach the smaller dimension of the guide 11. The Specification includes curves and tables for use in determining the shape and dimensions of the bore. The emitting slot of the magnetron need not be of dumb-bell shape, but may be of various configurations constituted by enlarged end apertures connected by a comparatively narrow slot (Figs. 8-14, not shown). The anode structure of the magnetron surrounds a tubular cathode 21 fitted with flanged ends 22 and heated by a filament 24. The anode is carried in a ferromagnetic cylinder 10 sealed at its ends by flanged members 14. Polepieces 30, 31 either permanently magnetized or with coil excitation are secured by clamping rings 34 to discs 33 fitting the cylinder 10. Spacing rings 36 are interposed between the anode structure and discs 37 carried on the polepieces. Cathode and heater leads are taken out at one end of the generator, which is evacuated from a. nipple 69 at the opposite end.
