Abstract

644,852. Magnetrons. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 30, 1945, No. 32492. Convention date, Dec. 2, 1944. [Class 39 (i)] A magnetron with a resonant anode 2 of the multiple cavity type having a number of cylindrical openings 3 communicating by slots with a central opening 4 in which is located a cathode 10 is tuned by variably intercepting the magnetic component of the high-frequency field, by moving a ring- or disc-like member. The tuning device shown in Fig. 1 comprises two annular conducting rings 20, 21 on opposite sides of the anode and covering the cavities and the slots respectively so that the inductance and capacitance are simultaneously varied, preferably retaining their ratio constant. The rings are rigidly attached to a rod 22 and can be adjusted with respect to the anode by means of caps 26 on threaded sleeves 25 round bellows 23 secured in vacuum-tight relation to the envelope. The cathode 10 is shielded by disc 11 and supported from the envelope 1 by metal sleeves 12 and 13 insulated from sleeve 14 by cylinder 15. Alternate anode sections are joined together by straps lying in recesses 9 in the anode end faces in the region of the slots. In another form, the tuning device may comprise, as shown in Fig. 5, an annular disc with inwardly projecting tooth-like portions 34 lying in a transverse slot in the anode and adjustable by means of a right-angled arm 35, bellows 37 and screw 39 so that the portions of the cavities 3 covered by the members 34 can be varied by rotation of the disc. The container may be of copper.
