Abstract

1,134,734. Magnetrons. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 10 Aug., 1966, No. 35753/66. Heading H1D. In a coaxial magnetron having an outer cavity 32 coupled by slots with alternate cavities formed by the anode vanes 38 (Fig. 2, not shown), and with upper and lower polepieces 22 and 34, the envelope is assembled by welding together the flanges 16, 46, and 82, formed at the lower ends of the outer resonator wall 14, the anode cylinder 36, and the collar 80, respectively, whereby brazed joints are avoided. The outer resonator is designed to oscillate in the TE 011 mode, the undesired TE 121 mode being coupled out and attenuated via a small annular gap 90 between the wall 14 and the anode cylinder 36, which gap gives access to a groove 51 in the wall 14 housing a carbon-loaded attenuator ring 52 which is spring-loaded by member 50 against a matching ceramic ring 54. The ceramic output window 106 is mounted in a circular waveguide section 102 sandwiched between two rectangular waveguide sections 100 and 104, wires 108 welded along the longer sides of the latter (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) at their junction with the circular section providing, by suitable choice of the wire diameter, capacitive irises which permit matching of the output together with the use of the optimum thickness of window 106. The upper polepiece 22 includes an exhaust passage, and the manner of mounting the cathode 24 within the lower polepiece 34 permits the use of an emissive surface 64 having a diameter greater than the internal diameter of the polepieces.
