Abstract
998,594. Klystrons; waveguide windows. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Nov. 22, 1962 [Dec. 1, 1961], No. 7017/64. Divided out of 998,592. Headings H1D and H1W. A window assembly for passing microwave energy comprises a cavity resonator partitioned by an electromagnetic wave-permeable window 81, the cavity resonator being capable of supporting desired and undesired energy modes, and a mode-suppressor positioned orthogonal to the electric filed lines of the desired mode to suppress undesired modes. As shown, Fig. 3, the mode suppressor may be in the form of an electrical conductor 95. Alternatively, Fig. 5 (not shown), metal wires, strips or a layer of metal particles may be positioned directly on or plated on the window, or lossy strips so positioned to absorb wall currents of undesired modes, or coupling slots may be provided to couple the energy of undesired modes out of the region of the window. The assembly may be used in the output coupling stage of a klystron of the type described in Specification 998,592. Specifications 856,817 and 998,593 also are referred to.
