Abstract

998,592. Klystrons. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Nov. 22, 1962 [Dec. 1, 1961], No. 44259/62 Heading H1D. An electric discharge device, e.g. a multiple cavity klystron, having means for producing and directing a beam of charged particles along a predetermined path to a collector, and having means spaced along the path for producing successive electromagnetic interaction with the particles and for extracting high-frequency energy from them, comprises a vacuum-tight envelope enclosing the path which includes a plurality of metallic cup-shaped members 35, 39 each having apertures in the bases of the cups and each having outwardly directed flanges at the rims of the cup, at least some of the cupshaped members being joined at their bases in pairs and adjacent pairs being joined together at the flanges, the whole structure of cup-shaped members forming the envelope. An apertured disc 37 may be inserted between the flanged, and drift-tubes 38 may extend through the apertures in the discs and in the bases of the cups and extend into resonators 14, 15 formed by cups 35. The drift tubes may be cooled by fluid circulating through channels 44, 45, the fluid being supplied through channels provided in a septum 41 provided in each cup 39. The resonators are tuned by a tuning structure as described and claimed in Specification 998,593. The device may further comprise an output cavity resonator 16 having an output iris 71 formed in the wall of the resonator and communicating with a waveguide 74 having a portion with tapered walls, thus giving a frequency dependent impedance characteristic which compensates for changes in the resonator configuration during tuning and keeping the gap impedance substantially constant over the tunable frequency band of the device. Specifications 998,594 and 998,595 also are referred to.
