Abstract
912,052. Magnetrons. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 8, 1960 [Dec. 10, 1959], No. 42266/60. Class 39 (1). The stray magnetic field of a magnetron is directed around the output coupling transformer. The magnetic field H of the magnetron lies in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2 and at right-angles to the plane of Fig. 4. It is stated that when a field H of cyclotron value is present in the slot between transformer vanes 10, and especially in the ramp region 11, a multipactor discharge may be set up and the window of the magnetron (adjacent the ramp 11, but not shown) may be damaged. To avoid this, the magnetic field is diverted around the ramp region of the transformer by means of C-shaped steel elements 17, Fig. 2. The gaps between the elements are aligned with the field H. In a modification, the shielding structure comprises a steel annulus 19 which forms part of the output waveguide of the magnetron in the region of the ramp. The annulus is coated with a highly conductive material such as silver or copper at least on its inner surface.
