Abstract

452,490. Discharge apparatus. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP MACHINERIEEN-EN APPARATEN FABRIEKEN MEAF, 30, Croeselaan, Utrecht, Holland. Feb. 28, 1935, No. 6415. Convention date, March 1, 1934. [Class 39 (i)] A valve for ultra-short wave use comprises a resonator having a resonance space closed on all sides with the exception of a narrow gap and having a greater characteristic impedance in the vicinity of potential nodes than in that of potential loops. In one form, a hairpin cathode 4 is tensioned between two bars 5, 5<1>, surrounded by a metal tube 6 which has an open gridportion 7. The outer wall 8 of the resonator has two toroidal portions 9 and two portions 10, 11 forming short-circuiting condensers with the tube 6. The upper end of the tube 6 forms a quarter-wave aerial 12, the counterbalance 13 of which is a continuation of the tube 11. A control-grid may be arranged around the cathode so as to form with it a second resonator which may be excited by an external input or coupled reactively to the first resonator. The cathode may comprise a filament and an exciter anode. The tube may operate in a Barkhausen-Kurz 2 or a magnetron circuit. The surfaces bounding the resonance space may be highly polished and may be copper- or silver-plated. Specification 429,863 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the subjectmatter of Specifications 449,920, and 452,761. In addition it states that the outer and inner walls of the resonator may be sealed together in air - tight fashion so that the outer wall forms the envelope of the device. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
