Abstract
1,185,249. Velocity-modulated tubes. SIEMENS A.G. 8 August, 1967 [9 Aug., 1966], No. 36320/67. Heading H1D. In a velocity-modulated tube-e.g. a travelling-wave tube, backward-wave oscillator, or klystron-the electron collector consists of a hollow metal body 1 having an entry aperture 2 of reduced cross-section at one end, the other end being closed by a metal base-plate 6, insulated from the remainder of the collector and carrying a central conical needle 7 extending into the collector, whereby, if the base-plate and needle are maintained at a negative potential with respect to the remainder of the collector, the resultant radial electrostatic field both spreads the incident beam over the wall of the collector and prevents entry of secondary electrons into the discharge chamber of the tube. The base-plate and needle may be connected to cathode potential, the needle being constructed of, or coated with, gettering material.
