Abstract

839,688. Backward-wave tubes. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Feb. 11, 1959 [Feb. 12, 1958], No. 4741/59. Class 39(1). In a backward-wave oscillator tube incorporating an anode shaped as a delay line 2, a negative sole electrode 3 extending parallel to the delay line defining an electron and wave interaction duct 7a, an electrogun 4, 5 at one end of said duct, and means for establishing crossed magnetic and electric fields in the duct for propagating the beam therethrough, the sole electrode extends only opposite the non- attenuated portion of the delay line 2 while an additional smooth electrode 8 is provided in registry with and insulated from the sole electrode and opposite the attenuated portion of the delay line 2<SP>1</SP>. The delay line and smooth electrode are at the same potential. In a modification additional energy absorbing means between the delay line 2<SP>1</SP> and smooth electrode, these may comprise a coating or a coated ceramic plate placed on the electrode, a further length of delay winding bent back on itself are these two means in combination. This tube arrangement protects the winds 2<SP>1</SP> from electron bombardment which may cause the coating to fall away. Specification 699,893 is referred to.
