Abstract

1,039,824. Ion beam space propulsion engine. CSF-COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. April 23,1964 [May 21, 1963], No. 16817/64. Class F1J. [Also in Group H1] In an ion beam space propulsion engine neutralization is effected by secondary electron emission, the outer part of the beam 28, after being concentrated to a cross-over point or to a region of minimum cross-section 31 by an electrostatic lens system 24, 29, 32 diverges onto a secondary emissive surface 33 within the electrode 32. By adjusting the position of the cross-over the degree of neutralization may be varied. Alternatively a magnetic lens may be used and in modifications the secondary emissive surface may be provided on an outwardly flared portion of the electrode 32 or the electrode 32 may be terminated by a secondary emissive grid of constant or radially variable pitch. A suitable secondary emissive material is tungsten and the ion may be produced from caesium or argon vapour.
