Abstract

862,892. Thermionic-cathode tubes. DUNKEL, M. M., [trading as LEYBOLDS NACHFOLGER, E.]. Feb. 27, 1958 [Feb. 27, 1957], No. 6431/58. Class 39(1). A high-vacuum ion-getter pump comprises within a pump vessel an ionizing device having one electrode that serves as a hot cathode and an electrode adapted to be kept at a positive potential in relation to the cathode, a getter substance applied for its evaporation to one of the. said electrodes, and a surface for receiving a deposit of the evaporated getter substance. The arrangement shown comprises a cathode 2 connected by wires 21 and 22 to a heating battery 23. A helical grid 3 is connected by wires 31 and 32 to a heating battery 33 and is maintained at a positive potential of 200-300 volts with respect to the cathode by a battery 34, and acts as an electron collector. Getter material 4 in the form of wire or strip wound around the grid wire 3 is vaporized by passing current through the grid wire and is deposited in the form of a layer 5 on the glass wall 1. The layer 5 is connected by a wire 51 to a battery 52 and is maintained at a potential of 20-50 volts negative with respect to the cathode 2 and acts as an ion absorber. A magnetic field produced by a coil 6 increases the length of the electron paths. The apparatus is evacuated and the grid 3 and getter metal outgassed before putting the pump into operation.
