Abstract
813,104. Velocity modulation tubes. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Aug. 10, 1955, No. 33621/57. Divided out of 813,103. Class 39(1). In a floating kidney velocity modulation tube the cathode 11, Fig. 4, amplitude modulating grid 29 cavity resonator 35 drift tube 36 and collector are mutually insulated for D.C. and carry different D.C. potentials and the amplitude modulating grid 29 is energized by a source located outside and separate from the cavity resonator. The potential applied to the drift tube can be varied to achieve electronic tuning. The drift tube is carried by a hollow arm 57 of rectangular cross-section which forms with the resonator wall chokes 63, 64 to prevent escape of energy from the resonator. The chokes 63, 64 each have a coaxial section and a <SP>#</SP>/ 4 radial section. The grid 29 and focusing lip above it are at the same D.C. potential. The collector has a higher D.C. voltage than the resonator to repel the positive ions back to the resonator so that ions are not focused on to the collector.
