671,296. Travelling-wave tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Nov. 3, 1950 [Nov. 8, 1949], No. 28583/49. Class 39 (i). The helix 2 of a travelling-wave tube is so dimensioned as to be sufficiently dispersive to discriminate between various harmonics of a given frequency so that a particular harmonic is selected and amplified whereas the given frequency itself is density-modulated in a region prior to the entrance of the beam into the helix 2. The electron gun comprises a cathode 8 and a control grid 9, input being applied through a coaxial connection 14 from a source 15. The cathode, control grid and accelerating anode 10 are arranged so that were the accelerating anode replaced by a member non-permeable to electrons, the structure would form a triode suitable for use as a Class C amplifier at the frequency of the source 15. Instead of the " Class C triode " electron gun a cavity resonator and an ordinary type gun may be used, Fig. 2 (not shown), or in place of the resonator a further travelling-wave structure, Fig. 3 (not shown), may be employed. For use as an oscillatory structure for density modulating the beam a resonant structure which functions in the manner of a coaxial line type modulator may also be used, Fig. 4 (not shown).
